Surprise, surprise Vaksana Farms just got a whole lot more exotic!
Yes, you read that right. We’ve welcomed two magnificent camels to our ever-growing animal family! And as much as they’ve turned heads and sparked smiles from every guest who visits, they’ve also taught us a thing or two about desert life especially their quirky eating habits.
So naturally, we had questions. What do camels eat? Do they munch on cacti like in cartoons? Are they picky eaters or laid-back grazers?
Here are 7 fun and surprising things we’ve learned about what camels really eat straight from the sandy trails to the green pastures of Vaksana.
1. They Love Dry Grasses and Grains
Camels are desert survivors, so they’re perfectly fine munching on dry grasses, hay, and even grainy fodder. At Vaksana, we provide them with a clean mix of dry grasses that they happily nibble on throughout the day.
2. Tender Leaves Are a Treat
Turns out, they love leafy greens too — particularly tender branches from native trees like neem and banyan. We’ve seen them curiously reach out with their long necks to sniff and sample the leaves around our farm paths.
3. Yes, They Can Eat Thorny Plants But We Don’t Serve Those!
In the wild, camels are known to eat thorny bushes and even cacti (thanks to their thick lips). But don’t worry we keep things safe and nourishing here. No prickles on the menu at Vaksana!
4. They Like Crunchy Vegetables
Carrots, beets, and pumpkins? Yes, please! While not a daily item, we occasionally offer crunchy vegetables as enrichment treats and our camels seem to enjoy every bite.
5. They Drink A Lot of Water But Not Very Often
Camels are known for their ability to go without water for days, but when they drink, they gulp down massive amounts at once. We make sure fresh, clean water is always available, even if they don’t visit it as often as our ducks or cows.
6. They Need Salt – Just Like the Others
Salt licks are a favorite among many farm animals, and our camels are no exception. They get their share of essential minerals through natural salt blocks we’ve placed in their enclosure.
7. They Eat Slowly, Calmly, and Gracefully
Watching them chew is oddly satisfying. There’s a rhythm to it — unhurried, mindful, almost meditative. It’s a reminder of why we brought them here in the first place: to add to the calm, serene, and slow-living charm of Vaksana Farms.
Why We Brought Camels to Vaksana
At Vaksana Farms, we believe in creating unique, soul-soothing farm experiences. With cows, ducks, turkeys, chickens, and now camels our farm is becoming a living classroom where nature, animals, and people reconnect.
Our camels aren’t just here to pose for photos (though they do that brilliantly!). They’re here to help us all slow down, observe, and learn from nature one thoughtful chew at a time.
So next time you visit, don’t be surprised if a gentle giant greets you near the trees. Come say hello they’re friendly, curious, and always up for a leafy snack.
