Every place has a heartbeat. For us, that heartbeat needed a name. When we began the farm in 2011, we knew right away that a patch of land without a name felt like an incomplete story. A name does more than label a place it gives the place an identity, a personality, and a promise. It becomes the first thing people remember, the word that carries your values when you aren’t there to speak for them. We wanted a name that felt true to the land we were building: alive, nourishing, and rooted.
Searching for the right word
We started simply: a list of words that mattered to us Open, Collaboration, Sweat, Joy, Fertility. Words that described what we wanted people to experience and feel when they walked through our gates. Because the farm is tied to the land and to traditions, we turned naturally to Sanskrit: a language that felt timeless and full of meaning.
Names like Navadina (New Day), Vyatta (Open), SasyaPradha (Fertile), Samasta (Whole), and Tanha (Thirst for Living) made the shortlist. Each one had its own charm and story. But when we paused on Vaksana, something shifted.
Why Vaksana felt right
Vaksana (वक्षण) is a small word with a big life. Depending on the context, it can mean nourishment, invigoration, or fertile soil all things that are central to farming. In some usages it even evokes the mother’s chest, a symbol of life and nurture. That layered meaning captured, almost exactly, what we were trying to build: a place that feeds the body, refreshes the spirit, and fosters growth.
It wasn’t poetic coincidence. It was recognition. The word held both the practical fertile fields, healthy food and the emotional safety, renewal, belonging.
The moment of choice
Choosing a name ended up feeling like a small ceremony. We wrote each option on a sheet of paper and passed it around. Each of us picked favorites, then spoke about why a particular word resonated. Vaksana won unanimously not because it sounded the most exotic, but because it felt honest. It wasn’t aspirational in a way that tried too hard; it simply reflected what the land already was and what we wanted it to become.
And a tiny practical gift: the domains were available the same day, so we booked them. A small act, but somehow fitting the name and the farm were finally claimed.
What the name does now
Today, saying “Vaksana” is like saying the farm itself. It’s not just a brand or an address; it’s the promise of fresh mornings, soil that yields, and a place that restores. Visitors don’t come only for the scenic views or the activities they come because the place feels nourishing. Teachers bring students for hands-on learning. Families come to slow down. City-weary guests come to breathe. The name helps set that expectation and then the farm delivers it.
A name that grows with us
Names change people’s perceptions slowly but surely. Vaksana has become shorthand for our values: stewardship, nourishment, and renewal. It reminds us to tend the land carefully, welcome visitors with warmth, and preserve the farm’s natural generosity.
When guests leave with sticky hands from harvesting, or when students return home excited about the life cycle of a plant, we hear the name echoed back and we know that Vaksana is doing its work.
Come experience Vaksana
A name can be a story starter. Ours began with a few words on paper and grew into a place that feeds more than crops. If you’ve ever wondered what a farm that’s named for nourishment feels like, come by and see. Walk the fields, taste the harvest, and feel why this small Sanskrit word chose us as much as we chose it.
